Ferrari 550 Maranello: V12 Perfection

Having looked at the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (otherwise known as the Daytona) in the first film (see it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFj5n... ) , this time it’s the turn of the 550 Maranello. Once again, it was sourced by Bell Sport & Classic and seeing the two cars parked up outside their showroom I was surprised that the 550 didn’t look vastly bigger than the Daytona given the decades between them. To my eyes it’s not as attractive as the earlier front-engined, V12 supercar, but as soon as you get into the Maranello it is obvious how much things moved on between 1973 and 1996. The whole interior is vastly better laid out and the car feels smaller and more intimate as a result. Get going and the 550 immediately feels possessed of a totally different level of performance, too - right up there with more modern machinery, in fact. It might have ‘only’ 478bhp and 420lb ft of torque (131bhp and 102lb ft up on the Daytona but 134bhp and 141lb ft down on the current junior Ferrari, the Roma) but the 550’s 5.5-litre V12 has an incredible muscularity and flexibility to it. I was genuinely stunned by just how strong it feels. Like the Daytona, the Maranello has wishbones all round with anti-roll bars front and rear. However, the trick up the 550’s more modern wheel arches is the electronically controlled variable dampers. There are only two options, Normal and Sport, but the change in character when the firmer setting is selected is noticeable and welcome. It’s still not that firm by 2022 standards, but with a bit of extra support and control in the corners the 550 really comes alive, feeling as playful and easy to drive as an M2 CS. The fact that you can currently get one for similar money to the BMW makes it an absolute bargain in my eyes. The Daytona is undoubtedly the more iconic car, but I think we have a huge amount to thank the 550 Maranello for. It successfully brought back the front-engined V12 Ferrari supercar at a time when mid-engined really seemed to be the only way forward. Without the huge success of the 550 we wouldn’t have had the 599, F12 and 812 Superfast and I think the motoring landscape would be a slightly poorer place as a result. The Ferrari F50 is the Goldilocks Supercar: Just Right - ISSIMI DRIVES

Derek Tam-Scott is an outspoken critic of many (perhaps even most?) supercars but his experience with the Ferrari F50 is different. Existing somewhere between the unforgiving nature of the Lamborghini Countach and the far too fast to properly use on the road character of modern supercars, the F50 is among the most enjoyable Ferrari road cars for the last 40 years. Employing F1 technology for the road such as a composite chassis, stressed member naturally-aspirated 8500 RPM V12, 6-speed manual transmission, and complete lack of driver aids, the F50 is a thrilling yet still surprisingly easy to drive supercar that truly is super.

Walter Röhrl and the Porsche 964 Carrera 3.8 RS

“This Automobile is a real Pleasure”, these are the exact words Walter Rorhl used to describe the Porsche 964 Carrera 3.8 RS when he wrote the famous article on Christophorus Magazine in 1993. He said more, on the engine for example: “This engine responds spontaneously to the throttle, the intake noise pleases me”. But, reading the Christophorus article almost 30 years later made us feel how would it be for Walter to drive this very car now, and how would it be to take the same exact photos Michael Moesch took for the article and that became the official photos of one of the rarest and most desirable Porsche ever made? Well, since here at ISSIMI we like to take things seriously, when we found the car in 2022 somewhere in Europe, we wanted to recreate the same pictures and have Walter to describe the car now, after almost 30 years. The BMW E28 M5 is the Most Driver-Oriented M5 Ever Made - ISSIMI

The E28 M5 simultaneously started the M5 dynasty which survives to this day and also inspired a renaissance of high performance sedans from other manufacturers. Each subsequent generation of M5 has gotten faster yes, but also softer: more sedan and less sport. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott explores the origins of the first ever M5, from the creation of BMW’s Motorsport division in the 1970s as a racing arm to run the CS, CSL and M1, to the debut of the first 5 series at the same time, the E12. He also drives the E28 M5 and discovers its dual personality. The average driver could use one of these cars for years without discovering that its limit behavior has a sporting purity that is engaging in a way that few modern cars achieve, sports or otherwise.

Singer DLS Project: the best Porsche 911? £2mil, 9,300rpm

Here it is, the Porsche 911 Reimagined by Singer – Dynamics and Lightweighting Study (DLS, if you value your time). It’s the answer to the simplest of questions: “What if we pursued the ultimate, no-compromise air-cooled 911? And what if we touched it with a Formula One team?” But is this 500bhp, 9,300rpm restomod worth its £2million price tag? Well, we sent Top Gear’s Head of Car Testing, Ollie Marriage, to Wales to find out. Trust us, this one is worth cleaning your ears out and turning the volume up for.

McLaren F1 — BTS with DTS

n its day, the McLaren F1 seized headlines for its record-breaking top speed, but in reality, that was never one of the car’s performance objectives and it is actually one of the least interesting features of the car. In this video, Derek Tam-Scott discusses many of the more interesting parts of the F1. Such as the fact that the car’s designer, Gordon Murray, tried to be allowed to sit in the car while it was crash tested. Or the fact that it’s almost exactly the same size as a Porsche Boxster. And 10 inches shorter than a modern 911, 2.5 feet shorter than an XJ220, and 700 pounds lighter than either. Or the fact that the production manager for the car once spent an entire weekend going to grocery stores looking for the perfect eggplant (well, aubergine) to match its color at the request of the customer who had ordered a car. And much more. The car is of course one of the most revered and desired cars of all time. Derek asks (and answers) whether it’s overhyped or whether the car truly does deserve the attention it receives. He also explores the origins of the car, starting with Gordon Murray’s Formula 1 cars at Brabham and McLaren, and on through the development of the F1, including why the car is powered by a BMW Motorsport engine. In the course of this discussion, he reveals the almost innumerable reasons why the car is so unlike any other car before or since, a key part of its enduring legacy. MYTH? MERCEDES E60 AMG W124

1994 Mercedes Benz E60 AMG. That's right! A PRE-merger Mercedes/AMG car. A REAL 957 coded option (AMG Engineering Package). Some cars were taken brand new to AMG by the private owner, but only a handful were designated by Mercedes-Benz. 957 code means Mercedes pick this car to be converted to an AMG. This car is not for sale. It was offered by a good friend/client to review. We are thankful for the opportunity to experience a real E60 for the 1st time. Approximately 130 cars were ever produced for the wold, but only about 30% were actual 957 coded, making this car ultra rare! This particualr car was part of a retirement package for a Mercedes-Benz executive. If you enjoyed this video, please like, share and subscribe! We look forward to bringing you more reviews on exclusive cars.

Jaguar XJ220 - the overlooked Supercar icon?

Volvo P1800 Cyan Racing review | Amazing restomod tested | Autocar

There's not much original P1800 left. Cyan takes a few bits of the structure and rebuilds an entire car around it, including a 2.0-lire 414bhp turbocharged engine, double-wishbone suspension all around and plenty of carbon fibre. The result is a car that costs nearly £400,000 and weighs just 990kg. Cyan doesn't quote 0-60mph numbers of a top speed, but given the P1800 Cyan has no driver aids and a manual gearbox, we reckon it'll hit 60mph in under 5.0seconds and go on to 170mph.

Porsche Carrera RS — Derek Tam-Scott

The 1973 Porsche Carrera RS is instantly recognizable thanks to its distinctive “Carrera” scripts and ducktail. It’s also one of the most valuable 911 road cars that exists, even if it looks more than a bit like every other 911 of the era. So what makes the RS so special and why does it exist in the first place? Derek Tam-Scott explores these questions and more in this video, contextualizing the RS in terms of what else was happening at Porsche at the time, including the surprisingly significant role of the 917 in the origin of the RS. He describes how the RS differs from lesser 911s, and explains that the fundamental purpose of the car was to homologate it for racing by building a minimum of 500 examples for road use. The racing version of the car, the RSR, was exceptionally successful, often beating all out racing prototypes in endurance races and ultimately paving the way for a host of other extremely successful 911-based race cars, ultimately culminating with the 935 achieving an overall win at Le Mans in 1979. With all this racing heritage, what is the car like on the street? In short, it’s epically good, and Derek can’t stop talking about it. BTS (behind the scenes) with DTS: Derek Tam-Scott’s spirit age is excess of 75 years old, and nowhere is that clearer than his taste in cars. At age 16, he went to work at one of the United States' foremost vintage car dealers, which cemented his elderly taste. Now with a decade and a half’s experience buying, selling, driving, and brokering classic and exotic cars, he’s experienced many of the world’s most iconic cars. And even liked some of them. Most of the car enthusiasts of Derek’s generation (and well, let’s be honest, even a generation or two before him) don’t have much experience with the magic of vintage cars prior to the 1980s, and therefore lack the knowledge and exposure to get genuinely excited about them. The goal of BTS is to give an insider’s perspective on why these cars particularly are great...or at least interesting and noteworthy. Derek brings his encyclopedic knowledge and broad experience together to contextualize these cars to give the audience understanding of both why it matters, and what it’s actually like to experience the cars. Lamborghini Miura S — Derek Tam-Scott

The Lamborghini Miura is often described as the world’s first supercar, but it was actually something of an accident. Rather than being ordered by Ferruccio Lamborghini, the Miura was the result of his talented and young engineers riffing on what they themselves wanted to make. They brought their ideas to Ferruccio, who told them to go ahead and develop the concept. When it was shown publicly, everyone absolutely lost it over the car. Because of this reaction, what was intended to be an exploratory concept became a production car, one which created an entirely new genre of car, forever altering the course of the sports car.
