Having looked at the Ferrari 365 GTB/4 (otherwise known as the Daytona) in the first film (see it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yFj5n... ) , this time it’s the turn of the 550 Maranello. Once again, it was sourced by Bell Sport & Classic and seeing the two cars parked up outside their showroom I was surprised that the 550 didn’t look vastly bigger than the Daytona given the decades between them. To my eyes it’s not as attractive as the earlier front-engined, V12 supercar, but as soon as you get into the Maranello it is obvious how much things moved on between 1973 and 1996.
The whole interior is vastly better laid out and the car feels smaller and more intimate as a result. Get going and the 550 immediately feels possessed of a totally different level of performance, too - right up there with more modern machinery, in fact. It might have ‘only’ 478bhp and 420lb ft of torque (131bhp and 102lb ft up on the Daytona but 134bhp and 141lb ft down on the current junior Ferrari, the Roma) but the 550’s 5.5-litre V12 has an incredible muscularity and flexibility to it. I was genuinely stunned by just how strong it feels.
Like the Daytona, the Maranello has wishbones all round with anti-roll bars front and rear. However, the trick up the 550’s more modern wheel arches is the electronically controlled variable dampers. There are only two options, Normal and Sport, but the change in character when the firmer setting is selected is noticeable and welcome. It’s still not that firm by 2022 standards, but with a bit of extra support and control in the corners the 550 really comes alive, feeling as playful and easy to drive as an M2 CS. The fact that you can currently get one for similar money to the BMW makes it an absolute bargain in my eyes.
The Daytona is undoubtedly the more iconic car, but I think we have a huge amount to thank the 550 Maranello for. It successfully brought back the front-engined V12 Ferrari supercar at a time when mid-engined really seemed to be the only way forward. Without the huge success of the 550 we wouldn’t have had the 599, F12 and 812 Superfast and I think the motoring landscape would be a slightly poorer place as a result.

The Ferrari F50 is the Goldilocks Supercar: Just Right - ISSIMI DRIVES
Derek Tam-Scott is an outspoken critic of many (perhaps even most?) supercars but his experience with the Ferrari F50 is different. Existing somewhere between the unforgiving nature of the Lamborghini Countach and the far too fast to properly use on the road character of modern supercars, the F50 is among the most enjoyable Ferrari road cars for the last 40 years. Employing F1 technology for the road such as a composite chassis, stressed member naturally-aspirated 8500 RPM V12, 6-speed manual transmission, and complete lack of driver aids, the F50 is a thrilling yet still surprisingly easy to drive supercar that truly is super.

This 1970 Ferrari 512 M Changed the Racing World Forever
When the Sunoco Ferrari 512 M first appeared at Daytona in 1971 it was a revelation. Manned by a dream team that included owner Roger Penske, chief mechanic John “Woody” Woodard, and drivers Mark Donohue and David Hobbs, the car combined Ferrari’s pedigree with Penske’s legendary attention to detail in everything from his crew’s uniforms to the polished wheels. Slated to run at Daytona, Sebring, Le Mans, and Watkins Glen, this 512 M was the odds-on favorite every time the Penske team rolled it onto the starting grid.
In a historic run of bum luck, however, the car never won a single race.
Debuting at the 24 Hours of Daytona, Donohue put the 512 M on the pole. Just before midnight, however, Vic Elford blew a tire on his Porsche 917 and in the ensuing slowdown, Charles Perry and his 911S ran into Donohue and the 512 M. The Penske crew taped and patched up the car as best they could and watched Donohue and Hobbs fight their way back to a third place finish.
Next up was the 12 Hours of Sebring, where the 512 M was once again on the pole. In the fourth hour of the race, away from photographers’ cameras, Pedro Rodriguez, driving a Porsche 917, rammed Donohue multiple times, sending the Ferrari into the pits for repairs. Once again, the pit crew managed to get the car back on the track, where it finished sixth.
Shipped to France for the Le Mans 24 Hours, the Ferrari 512 M was considered an underdog against the long-tailed Porsche 917s, which had a speed advantage over the Ferrari. Alas, the Sunoco team barely got a chance to prove itself: the 512 M retired with engine failure on Saturday evening.
Finally, it was back to the United States for the Watkins Glen 6 hours. Donohue was leading in the 54th lap when a broken steering knuckle sent him into the pits and out of the race. The Penske team came back the next day to run the car in the Watkins Glen Can Am race but the car’s original racing days were over.
Despite its misfortunes on the track, the Sunoco Ferrari 512 M and the team that ran it remain among the most important racing stories of the 1970s. At a time when racing teams paid little attention to “spit and polish,” Roger Penske demanded that his cars and his teams be precise, disciplined, and spotless. Remove bad luck from the equation and this insistence on excellence would’ve paid off. As it is, it still changed the world of motorsports, as other teams quickly realized that they would have to change their own operations if they hoped to compete successfully in the long term.

Moto Technique - The EVO Program

To celebrate our 40th Anniversary we are launching our EVO Program.
For nearly 35 years we restored all our customer cars virtually nut and bolt perfect to period correct specification.
Most modern cars are now too big, too powerful and too clinical. Some say, too sterile.
Clients are now approaching us and telling us how much they love classics like the Dino 246 and Ferrari 308, but these cars are getting on for 40 and 50 years old. They want to drive them, but they also want modern standards of power, handling and reliability, whilst retaining the charm and character of the original.
At Moto Technique we have probably restored, repaired or upgraded more Dino’s and Ferrari 308’s than anyone else in the UK.
We really do know these cars inside out and back to front.
That’s why we know all the areas where we can improve these wonderful machines and adapt them with more modern upgrades that just were not available at the time of manufacture or not viable for a production car due to cost effectivness.
Our EVO Program is bespoke and based on a menu system of different specifications and finishes.
This program really is limited only by a customer’s imaginations.

FERRARI 328 GTS 1986 | Rare color Azzurro Metallizzato | SCC

47549 Km | PRICETAG 2020: € 84.950,- This is a very authentic 1986 Ferrari 328 GTS. It was supplied from new in May 1986 and throughout its life its path has been carefully documented. It has never been restored and has always been perfectly maintained. The paintwork is still partially original, the underbody fully original. The mileage is low, with only 47,549 miles on the clock. It came from the factory in ‘Azzurro Metallizzato’ with a ‘Blu Scuro Autolux’ leather trim. This particular combination was only supplied in very rare occasions. The authentic interior is as good as new. As we mentioned above: This car has been meticulously documented and has a Ferrari Classische certificate also known as ‘Certificazione di Orginalita’ signed by Red Books` Piero Ferrari. This 328 GTS has won platinum, Best of Show and Best in Class amongst other prizes. This Ferrari is now even eligible for entry into the National Ferrari Shows in the “Preservation’ class.

1980 Ferrari 308 GT4: Bertone Designed

Sometime between his seventh and eighth birthday, Philippe Gardette sent a collection of his sports car designs in a letter to one of his favorite marques, Ferrari. Little did Philippe know back then, but his passion would catalyze into a 42-year-long career working with Prancing Horses. To give a sense of the level of kit that passes through his doors, Philippe pulls out a photo album and flips to a page that shows a 250 GTO on a lift above a 288 GTO—enough said. Spending time around these near mythic cars hasn’t jaded him though, and his relatively humble 308 GT4 has more sentimental value than any GTO, as the once-controversial Bertone designed wedge was the first car that that Philippe worked on and maintained. In this week’s film, we invite you to join us in Clermont-Ferrand, France, as we celebrate the only Bertone-designed Ferrari, and Philippe’s ongoing story with his tidy 1980 example. Ferrari 575 Superamerica

Superamerica comes from a Ferrari tradition in naming one-off or limited production cars with special names, in this case, taken from the famous 12 cylinder Superamerica cars built between 1956 and 1961.
What makes the Ferrari 575 Superamerica special is an electronically controlled Revochromico rotating hardtop that with a flip of a switch, rotates the roof to over and onto the trunk, to a lie flat position, leaving the owner with the ability to enjoy their car no matter the weather.
Pull down the locking handle, pull the little toggle switch on the center console, and voila, the roof rotates back and snugly flat into place in just 10 seconds.
As well, that rotating roof holds another trick; the transparency of the glass can be controlled by varying the amount of electric current running through it. From fully opaque to nearly clear in a matter of minutes is all controlled by a button.
The already monster 5.7 L 12 cylinder 575 motor was bumped up from 508 HP to 533 HP by reducing the back pressure to the exhaust system, and now that famous 12 cylinder note is so much more enjoyable with the top down.
Ferrari build sheets state the 575 Superamerica weight at 200 lbs. more than the coupe due to structural strengthening, but the added horse power makes up for the increased weight and the Ferrari 575 Superamerica accelerates from zero to 60 MPH in a scant 4.2 seconds with the F-1 transmission.
Billed as the fastest convertible in the world, at 199 MPH, it certainly lived up to the title.
Only 559 Superamericas were built, and their low production numbers and unique design make them very sought after by sports car enthusiasts.
Blending the romance of a convertible with the practicality of a coupe, the Superamerica is a truly rare collectible.
